Letters, Words & Rhyme Time

Lately we have been learning lots about letters and words. We know that...
"Letters make up the alphabet. Letters can be joined together to make words."
and
"Words are groups of letters that make sense."

We know that our names are words and we have been investigating how many letters are in our name. We discovered that some of us have long names and some of us have short names. After many games and graphing activities, we found that most children in the class had 6 letters in their name. The shortest name had 3 letters and the longest had 8!

Here we are reading our friends' names and matching them to their photo.

As a class we counted how many letters were in our name and matched it to the correct numeral.

We also explored and counted the letters in our friends' names.

First term has seen us working really hard on rhyming words and if you ask us "What is a rhyming word?" we'll tell you...
"Rhyming words are words that sound nearly the same!"

Here we are matching hearts to find rhyming pairs...

We are a clever bunch!

Holidays are nearly upon us but please come back soon to see what we got up to for Harmony Day!

A Teddy Bears' Picnic Reward!

Following classroom rules is not always an easy thing to do! Especially when you are so excited about being at school and there are so many wonderful things going on around you...however, being able to follow rules and instructions is an important skill all children must build.

Our 5 classroom rules come from a wonderful approach to teaching and learning called Whole Brain Teaching and are;

We have all been working very hard to follow these rules at school and by doing so, have been; learning to take responsibility for our own behaviour and actions, practising patience and turn taking, building resilience, as well as making sure our classroom a fun and safe place to be for everyone.

Over the last two weeks, we had a friendly 'teachers versus children' competition to encourage the children to follow our classroom rules...and...the children won! Their reward for doing the right thing was a Teddy Bears' Picnic!

We baked and decorated our own cupcakes to enjoy on the day and took them up to the playground at the top of the school where we had a fantastic picnic and play!

We certainly had lots of marvelous things to eat and wonderful games to play!

Later that afternoon, we drew pictures about our day and shared stories about our favourite parts of the Teddy Bears' Picnic.

It was definitely lots of cuddly fun!!

Getting to Know You!

A busy, busy bunch...

Can you believe it's almost the end of week 4 already!? I know I can't!!
The pre-primary children have been busy engaging in their new environment in numerous ways and I believe we all know each other a little better now and are happy coming to school :)  The lovely hellos and smiles Mrs Clarkson and I get on arrival each morning are just beautiful and tell us, Room 15 must be a great place to be!

We have been playing games, discovering new boundaries, learning the rules of our classroom, practising patience and turn taking, building stamina for daily tasks and learning how to take risks and try new things. A lot to take in for littlies who are just 4 and 5... don't you think?!

Take a peek at us enjoying our new pre-primary classroom!
